Who are Signet Breeding Services?
Signet is part of the Meat and Livestock Commission's Technical Division. Signet is responsible for delivering breeding evaluations to the sheep and beef sector throughout the UK.
What is the need for Signet Breeding Services?
Commercial sheep and beef producers are coming under increasing pressure to manage their businesses more efficiently and produce a product that meets market requirements. This means that producers need to breed fast growing stock, which produce well muscled, lean carcases at an appropriate carcase weight.
The identification and utilisation of superior breeding stock is an excellent way in which to meet these objectives. The selection of improved breeding stock provides both a permanent and cumulative way in which livestock producers can improve the output and financial return from their flocks and herds.
Services to Pedigree Producers
Our breeding services, Sheepbreeder and Beefbreeder, provide pedigree breeders with objective information from which to make strategic decisions.
Beefbreeder has gained a wide acceptance in both the commercial and pedigree sector of the beef industry, with commercial bull buyers selecting and paying more money for breeding stock with superior breeding merit.
Sheepbreeder's hi-tech service is an integral part of rural development policies in Scotland, Wales and the North of England. Projects have been established in these areas such as the Highlands & Islands Sheep Strategy (HISS), Farming Connect and the Northern and Upland Sheep Strategy (NUSS). These projects aim to improve the carcase quality of hill sheep, therefore increasing their value and helping to sustain a livelihood in disadvantaged areas. A major step forward for sheep breeding throughout the UK has been the development of Sire Reference Schemes. Through involvement in these schemes breeders have worked together to enhance the quality of their flocks, making high levels of breeding improvement in commercially important traits.
